40 Years Ago: YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS record a Peel session

YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS recorded their one John Peel session on this day in 1980 at Maida Vale 4.

I remember this night well - it was a huge thrill to be invitied to record for the Peel Sessions at BBC Maida Vale in London. I was not such a big fan, personally, of the John Peel show. It feels almost sacrilegious now, to say that, because of the way he helped so much great music to be heard. (I often quote his criterion for how he chose the music he broadcasted: "It must be music that HAD to be made.") But before punk he only played folk music and I am not a fan of either.

Peel championed the band on his show, especially during 1980, frequently playing songs from Colossal Youth (released February), and the Final Day single (released June).

This session first aired a week after recording, on the 26th of August, and was repeated twice that year - in September and October.
