Venowl - Gnawed Gristle and Bone (Cassette)

Review

The revolting concoction of multiple vocal styles, a healthy slab of chaotic, unnerving noise and snail paced doom/drone has always made Venowl stand out to me. If you've followed this band at all you know how much they have developed and changed over time. Gnawed Gristle and Bone is no exception to this development. It starts off with what we've come to know Venowl as sounding like but with a touch of something else. The unsettlingly slow, anticipatory-pace soaked in some of the most tortured screams, growls, grunts, yells and general throat butchery possible reigns strong and heavy for about eleven and a half minutes before we catch a brief glimpse at some of that change. A choral voice infiltrates the chaos after what sounds like a tape being set into warp-speed. It only lasts a few brief seconds but it’s a hint towards what’s to come on the rest of the track. - Blackened Slugs 5/5
