Following a four-year hiatus and a personnel reshuffle brought on by bassist, Einar Frederiksen's untimely passing in 2002, Norwegian cult doom band, FUNERAL continue the doom-spreading crusade that once earned them the label of 'most depressing band in the world' with third studio album, 'From These Wounds'. Constantly challenging themselves musically not to bind themselves to pure funeral doom (a subgenre spawned by their earlier releases), FUNERAL discharged the services of opera-oriented chanteuse, Hanne Hukkelberg and recruited the more monastic and severe timbre of vocalist, Frode Forsmo (from Norwegian cult doom progressive band, MINAS TIRITH). FUNERAL's trademark - sombre riffs and drawn-out rhythms, sometimes reminiscent of a more cinematic MY DYING BRIDE, is injected with more contemporary, sensuous vitality on new album, 'From These Wounds' giving a more mature and earnest feel to the proceedings. Recorded at Vektor Facilities in Norway and still weaving melancholia inducing riffs with sagacious lyrical content, 'From These Wounds' is the perfect soundtrack to the darkest times of the year - namely right now.

Review

After Frederiksen and Loos' deaths, fans had no idea what to expect from Funeral; some of them no doubt expected the band to break up for good. But in fact, this 64-minute CD is excellent. Along the way, Funeral's sound has evolved with their many lineup changes; From These Wounds is best described as a melancholy, pessimistic doom metal/gothic metal outing that rocks aggressively but is highly melodic and intricate -- even ethereal a good bit of the time. - 4/5
