Arena (Rodney Matthews) (Jigsaw Puzzle)

Matthews' second Asia commission. Keyboardist Geoff Downes gave Rodney a fairly good idea of what was required - a confrontational scene of positive versus negative, or good versus evil. He did several preliminary sketches, but did not feel he hit the target, until this one, chosen by Downes and vocalist / bassist John Payne. The layout of this design allowed Matthews to make more of the nuclear symbol and its transformation into a skull. Ever since the Chernobyl disaster, he has become even more concerned about the tightrope we walk when using nuclear energy.
